nonesane: See, this is the glory of fanfiction - all parts of canon or “canon” you don’t like, you just ignore (hello most of DS9 after Jadzia died…). As for old fans vs new fans, the internet is a huge place; I think there’s room for all of us ;)
- Heh. Indeed. Fan fiction is the way to go! :) And there are lots of different rooms for all of us, I agree - we just have to be a bit careful if we run into one another in the hallways of the fandom house, lol.
Mutual respect, the internet needs more of that! I myself am much more of a TOS and DS9 Trekkie than an Nu!Trek (mostly because of the way Uhura’s character was completely wasted in the 2009 movie, but that’s a rant for later today), but I don’t mind Nu!Trek.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been writing fanfics since I was 12 - I’m just so used to the idea of AUs and ATs that I don’t see Nu!Trek as canon, just as very expensive fanfiction.
I feel the situation with Nu!Trek vs TOS, when it comes to fans, is very similar to X-Men (movies) vs X-Men (comics) and Nolan!Batman vs comic/BtAS!Batman - there’s a ton of new fans coming in, some who just like the new stuff and some who like both the new stuff and the old. I mean, how many times haven’t we seen the Ledger!Joker vs BtAS!Joker flame wars?
Are these new fans less of fans than the old ones? I don’t think so. I just think we’re all fans of different stuff. I have many fandoms - in some I’m a new fan and in some I’m an old fan - and I’ve found that the fandoms I like hanging out in the most, are the ones where everyone can like whatever aspect of a franchise there is and still be accepted as one of the group.
Because what is fandom, if not a place to hang out and have fun? If we start locking people out just because they’re not old school enough, we ruin the fun, just like new fans can ruin the fun by calling old fans “boring” or such.
And now this rant has gotten far longer than I planned (as usual). I think I’ll go bake cookies (or buy them, because I’m lazy) and remember all the awesome experiences I’ve had with fandom since I joined, as a wee little twelve-year-old XD

But in the end you will return to the DS9 Garak/Bashir room and watch THEM have tea with one another. XD
