I was bullied in real life, throughout elementary school and high school. It left lasting emotional scars that I still struggle with. (I can’t be in the middle of a group of kids of a certain age, or even pass them on the street, without quietly freaking out — and I’m in my late 40s.)

Bullying needs to be stamped out, period. I frankly don’t give a hot shit about the bullies themselves: just stop the little fuckers, no matter what it takes.

Yeah, bullying is a huge problem that needs to be dealt with. I got off lightly, but my sister had hell for a few years (luckily, she also had a huge group of friends to help her get through it - they were all sort of in it together).

The main problem at my school was that the teachers in senior high (where the bullying was at its worst) didn’t give a hoot. We had two teachers who worked very actively against bullying, and therefore the others seemed to think they didn’t have to do jack shit about students being picked on.

The whole anti-bullying thing needs more energy put into it, in a completely new way, I think. We need to really question bullies about their actions - not just tell them, “you did a bad thing” and give them detention or have the bullied kid move (what sort of logic is that?!) but actually ask them why they do what they do and not let them get away with just answering “because”.

I think the most important thing to do is to not be angry with the bullies, or at least not show how angry you are. That just gives them the chance to twist the situation around in their heads, so that they are the victims of an unfair teacher.

Instead, bullies need to be sat down and calmly asked what the hell they think they’re doing as well as made to feel sympathy with their victim, the moment they do something wrong. Letting it go on for a while shows them that the adults don’t think bullying is wrong until the person who gets bullied complains.

Faulty logic on the bullies’ part, I know, but no one ever thinks they’re the bad guy and admitting to being one is usually quite painful = not something you do unless convinced.
